The “Sustainability” category sought initiatives that offered new approaches to educational sustainability (through appropriate funding mechanisms, good governance, suitable accreditation and quality control structure) thereby contributing to the creation of sustainable global societies.

The three specific criteria to judge applications under this category were:
1. Governance and accreditation structures: extent to which the initiative has governance and accreditation structures that guarantee its sustainability
2. Quality control structures: extent to which the activity has effective quality control structures to ensure its sustainability
3. Contribution to global societies: extent to which the activity has helped learners to understand how they can contribute effectively to increased global sustainability
